I felt the Lord move me to encourage someone today. Perhaps it is you. When I was a newer homeschooling mom there were many days I felt overwhelmed. We got behind and I felt stuck. Days where I wanted to throw in the towel and put them in public school. If that is ever you just remember this,
If you do nothing else today but teach your children about Jesus –then it was a good homeschooling day.
That’s it! That’s all there is too it! If you are having a stressful day and need a break–just do this one thing:
Pull out the Bible and read a story.
Pray with your children.
Sing a hymn together.
It will only take moments but its effect will last eternity.
Some parents get so caught up on making sure their kids go to Harvard that they forget it is most important that they go to Heaven. How can we teach them to seek God first and make Him first in their lives when each and every day in homeschool the study of God’s word and the reading of Scripture fell to the wayside. Children quickly see what is most important in the house. They are not fooled and the impression is deep. Make sure each day you keep the main thing the main thing.
We have many good and wonderful things that we teach our children as classical moms. Latin, Math, Science, Logic, etc… it’s all SO good. There are so many good things that we do –and should do. But let’s never forget the main thing. Each day there is one main event and it should be the opening act. It is when we meet with the Lord.
Family worship time is powerful: reading the Bible together, praying together, and singing songs of praise. Family worship can take just 5 min. But it’s effect is lasting. It is more valuable than Latin, and more precious than a scholarship to a great university. And here is why, there is no academic degree that will serve our children, nor do them any lasting good, if they do not have Jesus.
They will have education but will not have salvation. They will have “smarts” but they will lack the wisdom of God. Their eyes will be closed and they will not know the deception that you see so clearly. Train them up in the way they should go and when they are old they will not depart from it!
Teach them the Bible. Let them know it well. Let if be a joy. Let it be something they look forward to and love. Don’t skip it. If something must fall away that day (or each and every day) let it be so, but never let it be the Bible.
Treasure God’s Word, hide it in your heart, and teach your children to do so also. Then it will be a lamp unto their feet and and a light unto their path.
And so remember, if you do just one thing….let it be reading the Bible! And if that is all you manage to do for that day—it was a GOOD day!
